Is Ahmedinejad Out As Iranian President?

Published by at 2:55 pm under Iran

Everyone is waiting on the election results for Iran’s President today. The race is between the current hardline nut job and a surging moderate. The vote is seen as a referendum on the extremist Ahmedinejad and his confrontational positions with the rest of the world.  Some reports have the hard liner losing, and losing big

Reformist challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi won Iran’s presidential election on Friday with 65 percent of the vote, a close aide to the former premier claimed.

“According to the information received from provinces and from Tehran, Mousavi has got 65 percent of the votes cast,” Ali Akbar Mohatshemi-Pour told AFP.

Of course, no one knows for sure and the Ahmedinejad camp is also declaring a massive victory. Fingers crossed the Iranians have decided to pull back from the brink.

The new guy is a bad as the old. The Mullahs chose the President. So they get what they want. The Mullahs want nuclear weapons!

  2. Terrye says:

I dunno. Last I heard Ahamdinejad is claiming victory.

I tend to think kathie is right here. If there is a new guy, I will believe he is different when I actually see a difference.

Looks like he is in again. So the MSM line that Obama’s Cairo speech was going to change the world. WRONG! The evil Bush world is still intact. I guess words are only words after all.

Looks like the Iranian electorate just got ACORNed. Too bad. On the bright side, at least now the average Iranian has something in common with the average Chicago voter.

  6. WWS says:

Oh come on. As if there could ever be such a thing as an “honest” election in Iran.

This entire story has been a bad joke – just another exercise in western wishful thinking.

Either way, I don’t see Iran as giving up its nuclear weapon program, nor do I see Iran stopping support of terrorist organizations. The support of these organizations give Iran many advantages and a great deal of influence that it would otherwise not have.

After Mousavi was informed by the Interoir Ministry last night that he was on his way to victory, the morning’s results have Ahmedinnerjack winning with 60+% across the country

There is a “Guardians Council, a 12-member body of clerics and jurists” that vets candidates in Iran… disqualifies a pretty high percentage of them from running…
    .
Pretty easy to influence the election when the Mullah’s can throw out people they think are too pro-West…

This article explains it fairly well…

The election will be stolen from the winner of the popular vote if that’s what they want…

Does anybody think that Obama is worried about the new “axis of evil”, Syria, Iran and North Korea? Also Iran is in Venezuela, Bolivia and making nice with Obama’s cousin in Kenya. Somebody had better wake up. I’m thinking we need to give Mexico more help, forget the Arab countries.

He’s obviously not an extremist unless you think the Iranian people are also a bunch of extremists.

Countries don’t like being bullied by outside powers like the US and Israel. (You want extremists, look at who Israeli voters went for!) The US should re-establish relations with Iran. Ahmedinejad has now been elected twice. Does the USA care about democracy or just getting American puppets into power?

    Jules:

I have known a few Iranian expats who would disagree with you.

But then again a guy like you probably kind of gets a kick out of the whole lynching the homosexuals and beheading the unwed mothers aspect of the mullahs’ rule.

I read that Obama thinks this might make the Iranians easier to deal with. After all, they might feel like they have to make nice. That man is so naive it scares me.

According to this article… they didn’t even make it look good… Quote… U.S. analysts find it “not credible” that challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi would have lost the balloting in his hometown…

Hoping this is wrong but not very optimistic…

I read that as many as 100 have been killed in riots. What will Obama do? Nothing is my guess. Nothing at all. He will go right on dealing with them.

  18. gary1son says:

Yes Jules, obviously this outcome has nothing to do with the will of the Iranian people.

How anyone could believe that this country somehow has anything resembling fair elections, not to mention a fair candidate selection process, is beyond me. All evidence points to the contrary.

Huge riots. Hundreds dead. This is not reflective of a fair, or even semi-fair process.

Great perspective and informed insight from Totten, thanks Kathie.

Especially interesting his comparison of the current situation in Iran to that in Ramadi, Iraq.
