Al-Qaeda Left With The Gaza Strip
As al-qaeda is routed from its Iraq strongholds by Iraqis (see post below for the latest) they have to set their sights on something to show some progress in their jihad against the West and the moderate Arab states. Their plans to disable Lebanon have been thwarted for now by the Lebanese. So what is left? It seems, thanks to a new tape from Zawahiri (al Qaeda’s number 2 leader), al-Qaeda is now left with the Gaza strip:
Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri has voiced his support for radical Palestinian movement Hamas.
In a recording posted on the Internet, he endorsed the move by Hamas fighters to seize control of the Gaza Strip 10 days ago.
“Today we must suport the mujahedeen (holy warriors) in Palestine, including the Hamas mujahedden despite all the mistakes made by their leadership,” Zawahiri said in a recording on a site frequently used by Al-Qaeda.
The tape emerged 10 days after the Islamists of Hamas seized the Gaza Strip, overrunning their rivals from the secular Fatah party of president Mahmud Abbas.
Gaza is a hell hole of barren lands that requires massive, constant humanitarian support. I would not call gaining Gaza a victory, except it does allow for attacks to be launched against Isreal. It appears that Palestinian President Abbas and his Fatah movement understand the implications of a Palestinian war on Israel since they have now decided to take on Hamas and their version of al-Qaeda’s Islamo Fascism. As the article notes the new front on Terror will be Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.

When Israel withdrew from Gaza, they left behind intact working farms that were destroyed by Hamas.
Even if the Jews were pushed into the sea as Iran suggests, Hamas and Fatah would crumble the economy and resources through corruption and mismanagement.
Hezbollah seems to be the only offshoot that seems to not totally trash the area they control.
AQ and the Taliban are also loosers in this aspect.
