Is It Time To Call Iran’s Bluff?

Published by at 11:27 am under All General Discussions

If reports are correct, we must be coming to the point where we tell Iran to halt their nuclear weapons program – or else:

The United States, ahead of a key meeting on Iran on Monday, is discussing a 30 to 60-day deadline for Tehran to halt its nuclear program and cooperate with international inspectors or face intensified pressure in the UN Security Council, according to a U.S. official.

Monday’s meeting of the 35-nation International Atomic Energy Agency governing board is expected to take stock of Iran’s continued defiance of U.S. and European demands to end sensitive weapons-related uranium enrichment activity and then hand the case over to the security council.

The United States wants the council — which has enforcement powers — to issue a statement insisting Iran cease its nuclear activities and then giving Tehran “a time period to respond — say 30 to 60 days — after which the council would consider what to do” about applying further pressure, said the U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Well, there is UN pressure (we will talk you into submission) and there are other forms of pressure (monetary, followed by force if the message is still not clear). One thing is for sure, we cannot allow Iran to play the same game Saddam did in the 1990’s where he lied about his intentions for years to the UN and got away with it.

Of course, Iran is playing the same game as Saddam, daring the UN and EU to do something about their nuclear program, knowing full well most of the countries will buckle under – or worse, hope to see any country dethrone the US somehow.

Iran has warned that it will resume large-scale uranium enrichment if the international nucleaur watchdog goes ahead with its plan to refer the country to the UN Security Council.

update: I tried to find this earlier, but finally was led to it from American Thinker.  The West has to look at the Saddam tapes and then these revelations by an Iranian spokesman regarding the truthfulness of Iran’s words.

The man who for two years led Iran’s nuclear negotiations has laid out in unprecedented detail how the regime took advantage of talks with Britain, France and Germany to forge ahead with its secret atomic programme.

In a speech to a closed meeting of leading Islamic clerics and academics, Hassan Rowhani, who headed talks with the so-called EU3 until last year, revealed how Teheran played for time and tried to dupe the West after its secret nuclear programme was uncovered by the Iranian opposition in 2002.

He boasted that while talks were taking place in Teheran, Iran was able to complete the installation of equipment for conversion of yellowcake – a key stage in the nuclear fuel process – at its Isfahan plant but at the same time convince European diplomats that nothing was afoot.

“From the outset, the Americans kept telling the Europeans, ‘The Iranians are lying and deceiving you and they have not told you everything.’ The Europeans used to respond, ‘We trust them’,” he said.

Who are you going to believe?  The media and Democrats and EU ostriches or the ones telling us to our faces they lied?
