Liberal Media Admits BDS Drives Them

Published by at 11:37 pm under All General Discussions,FISA-NSA

What is so interesting about the non-issue surrounding the NSA-FISA hoopla is the leftwing of the nation has finally gone over the edge – and they don’t care! They proudly announce they are ready to impeach Bush for stopping terrorists in the US by monitoring their communications with their masterminds overseas.

Joe Klein, no conservative, but also not suffering Bush Derangement Syndrome, writes in Time (no less) on how the liberal leftwing is imploding right in front of our eyes:

House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat, engaged in a small but cheesy bit of deception last week. She released a letter, which quickly found its way to the front page of the New York Times, that she had written on Oct. 11, 2001, to then National Security Agency director General Michael V. Hayden. In it she expressed concern that Hayden, who had briefed the House Intelligence Committee about the steps he was taking to track down al-Qaeda terrorists after the 9/11 attacks, was not acting with “specific presidential authorization.” Hayden wrote her back that he was acting under the powers granted to his agency in a 1981 Executive Order. In fact, a 2002 investigation by the Joint Intelligence Committees concluded that the NSA was not doing as much as it could have been doing under the law—and that the entire U.S. intelligence community operated in a hypercautious defensive crouch.

The release of Pelosi’s letter last week and the subsequent Times story (“Agency First Acted on Its Own to Broaden Spying, Files Show”) left the misleading impression that a) Hayden had launched the controversial data-mining operation on his own, and b) Pelosi had protested it. But clearly the program didn’t exist when Pelosi wrote the letter. When I asked the Congresswoman about this, she said, “Some in the government have accused me of confusing apples and oranges. My response is, it’s all fruit.”

Pelosi admits she is being misleading – and obviously doesn’t care! Klein is not impressed. And he exposes more of her duplicity

But these concerns pale before the importance of the program. It would have been a scandal if the NSA had not been using these tools to track down the bad guys. There is evidence that the information harvested helped foil several plots and disrupt al-Qaeda operations.

There is also evidence, according to U.S. intelligence officials, that since the New York Times broke the story, the terrorists have modified their behavior, hampering our efforts to keep track of them—but also, on the plus side, hampering their ability to communicate with one another.

Pelosi made clear to me that she considered Hayden, now Deputy Director of National Intelligence, an honorable man who would not overstep his bounds. “I trust him,” she said. “I haven’t accused him of anything.

Yep. The leak possibly helped terrorists in the US escape detection, and increased the odds they will succeed, sooner or later. The odds are already against us. We have to be perfect, they have to be lucky once. Now, thanks to the NY Times, their luck improved immensely. Joe Klein predicts this game of helping the terrorists is going to rebound much worse on the Democrats

In fact, liberal Democrats are about as far from the American mainstream on these issues as Republicans were when they invaded the privacy of Terri Schiavo’s family in the right-to-die case last year.

But there is a difference. National security is a far more important issue, and until the Democrats make clear that they will err on the side of aggressiveness in the war against al-Qaeda, they will probably not regain the majority in Congress or the country.

Thankfully for America, and incidentally conservatives, the liberal democrats have shed all their faux pretexts that their efforts are not driven by an uncontrolled hate for Bush, or Bush Derangement Syndrome (BDS). So now we see the liberal media openly declaring their motives are BDS driven, as we have here:

Another president, perhaps. Maybe then it would be easier to look the other way, give a tacit nod to the abrogation of constitutional freedoms as a wartime necessity. After all, Abraham Lincoln suspended the right of habeas corpus during the Civil War and history does not begrudge him for it, given that he faced an enemy massed almost literally within sight of the White House.

But this is not President Lincoln we’re talking about. It’s not even President Franklin Roosevelt, succumbing to post-Pearl Harbor hysteria and interning thousands of Americans of Japanese ancestry.

No, we’re talking about President Bush — King George, if you will…

King George and his enablers argue that this is necessary to give investigators the agility they need to pursue terrorists.

It is a seductive argument. One is appalled to imagine the Statue of Liberty blown to smithereens while those who might have saved it are dithering over legal papers.

So yeah, another president and you might almost buy it.

Can it be any clearer? If any other President asked us to put national security first, even the worse civil rights abusers in our history, the lunatic left would align themselves with America first. But this is Bush – the object of their undying hate.

In the 1960’s – 1970’s Flip Wilson had his phrase “The Devil Made Me Do It” catch fire and represent behavior that challenged societal norms and authority. Today’s holdovers from this period now have “BDS Made Me Un-American”.

The left is clearly willing to allow terrorists to roam free because, hey Bush is the one trying to protect us. So, we now know who to blame if we are attacked. And it won’t be Bush who was trying to find and stop terrorists in our country, in our neighborhoods, in our cities – near to our families.

It will be those so obsessed with hate that when we relied on them to help protect us all, they balked and walked away – smiling their smug smiles.

  1. Joe Klein Advises The Democrats On How to Stay Out of Power

Anyone else see the Risen interview with Tim Russert where the smug self important little twerp tells us his article was an important public service?

It seems he was right and the terrorists are very grateful.

  2. Joe Klein: How to Stay Out of Power (and undermine the war in the process)

Joe Klein, no friend of the administration, writes a critique on Democrats who he thinks are playing too fast and loose with national security issues:

  3. […] I never got around to blogging this story (though many others, including our friends AJ, Sister Toldjah, and the MinuteMan), covered it well). Still, I can’t resist pointing you to the remarkable piece by Joe Klein of TIME, who positively skewers the Democrats over their own deception and weakness regarding the NSA and the Patriot Act. […]
