Be Thankful This 4th Of July, 2008

Published by at 8:22 am under All General Discussions

Victor Davis Hanson has the best piece out today regarding our nation’s birthday:

On this troubled Fourth we still should remember this is not 1776 when New York was in British hands and Americans in retreat across the state. It is not 1814 when the British burned Washington and the entire system of national credit collapsed — or July 4, 1864 when Americans awoke to news that 8,000 Americans had just been killed at Gettysburg.

We are not in 1932 when unemployment was still over 20 percent of the work force, and industrial production was less than half of what it had been just three years earlier, or July, 1942, when tens of thousands of American were dying in convoys and B-17s, and on islands of the Pacific in an existential war against Germany, Japan, and Italy.

Thank God it is not mid-summer 1950, when Seoul was overrun and arriving American troops were overwhelmed by Communist forces as they rushed in to save a crumbling South Korea. We are not in 1968 when the country was torn apart by the Tet Offensive, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, and the riots at the Democratic convention in Chicago. And we are not even in the waning days of 1979, a year in which the American embassy was seized in Tehran and hostages taken, the Soviets were invading Afghanistan, thousands were still being murdered in Cambodia, Communism was on the march in Central America, and our president was blaming our near 6-percent unemployment, 8-percent inflation, 15-percent interest rates, and weakening international profile on our own collective “malaise.”

Our troubles today pale in comparison to what others have had to deal with in our nation’s history. Instead of whining, handwringing and finger pointing this nation should be thankfully working together to keep us safe, prosperous and free. It really is not as bad as those on the political fringes like to make it out to be.

    AJ,

I hope that you and your family are enjoying a nice 4th together.

I was getting ready to place an order with Amazon and I noticed that your click through link to them is gone.

Are you still getting a little payola from referral traffic when I click through to their site?

If so, could you direct me to the linkage?

If not, I will choose another blogger from my readership list.

It won’t be much $$ but I guess every little bit adds up and I always try to do my shopping through your site.

    Just let me know.

    Thanks,

    BGG

    BGG,

We’re relaxing at home. And yes we are still using the Amazon link, and I can see it! Upper left, second icon down?

What O/S are you using? Did you try a refresh?

    Cheers, AJStrata

This is the greatest country that has ever been. The left is stupid in not appreciating it. Nowhere else in this world could they blather on about the government. They would be imprisoned and/or shot. Even Canada and England are giving up their rights to free speech with their Human Rights Commissions.

And the democrats want a “hate” law passed which would really limit our free speech. All republicans must vote in November. We must stop the democrats from ruining this country. Obama would be a disaster and would change our lives completely.

The democrats have taken over our media, our schools, congress, even the AARP. They have not let us drill for our own oil in the expectation that we can be forced to use less. The environmentalists rule this country through their democrat enablers.

    AJ,

    I am using Firefox 3.

I have refreshed the page a couple of times and still don’t see it.

I see the PayPal icon on the top right but nothing on the left except the blog posts.

I have double checked the script blocker and came up with no different results.

    Ideas?

    BGG,

Interesting. It is right below the PayPal icon! Maybe if you mouse-over it it may show up on the cursor.

We won’t get it fixed today so shop if you want to.

    AJ,

Unfortunately, mousing over doesn’t work either.

I have until Wed of next week to get the order placed. No huge rush.

I’ll try the computer at work on Monday and see if it is any different there.

Not a big deal at all. Just thought I would let you know.

    Thanks,

    BGG
