Fly By 09/19/05

Most likely there will only be time for the Fly By each day for the next three days – if that. Lots and lots of wonderful meetings to support.

The big news this morning is North Korea claiming it is ready to dump its nuclear weapons program. Every major newspaper and punidt will be discussing this I am sure. Tom Maguire has a post on this with the right amount of skeptisism. Words are cheap when dealing with North Korea.

Germany seems to have voted in a stalemate government. While not the best result, at least it is clear the country is having doubts about the Schroeder way. Germany needs so much overhauling of its socialist system in order to compete in the world market place, it is better the people wake up sooner rather than later and face their challenges.

For history buffs, there is news of a new book claiming the KGB had infiltrated all levels of India’s government during the Indira Gandhi era.

One of the media sad sacks is out today showing how easy it is for novices and the inexperienced to make wild accusations and make themselves out to be fools. Here is the question Sebastian Mallaby poses:

It’s hard to say what’s worse: The incompetence of the administration’s initial hurricane response or the cowardice of its follow-up.

What was worse was the media’s childish and unprofessional rantings about how easy it should be to deal with the destruction of a Category 5 hurricane which devastated a region the size of Britain. Truth is, it appears less than 1% of the people of New Orleans lost their lives – which is pretty darn good given what they faced. But there is always some wannabe know-it-all who nags from the sideline. They all just seemed to have gone to journalist school. Well, I guess somebody has to watch while others achieve something with their lives.

The NY Times also is on the edge of using tragic deaths for partisan gain. This story points to the heavy toll Katrina had on elderly patients in hospitals and nursing homes. The Times harps on the long rescue times for 100,000 people who stayed in the path of the storm. What the times does not do is point out the obvious. No matter what lame excuses Nagin and Blanco come up with for not dealing with 100,000 who did not or could not leave. The 100’s who were bed ridden in medical facilities should have been evacuated day one. And if they needed help they should have called in for help. This kind of lazy, politically-based reporting is why the NY Times will not be a major newpaper in 20 years.

On the lighter side, Cindy ‘Get the US Out of New Orleans’ Sheehan is now protesting Hillary’s lack of action against Bush and the war (and supposedly the occupation of New Orleans). Is this the beginning of the civil war in the Democrat party between the leftward fringes and what is left of the moderate dems?

Speaking in front of more than 500 supporters in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, Ms. Sheehan, speaking of Senator Clinton, said, “She knows that the war is a lie but she is waiting for the right time to say it.”

Then, as the crowd cheered, she issued a challenge to Senator Clinton, saying, “You say it or you are losing your job.”

Sorry, that’s it for now!

Thanks for all the great work, esp on Able Danger.
My math shows less than .1% of N.O. folks died.
    …or less than 1/1000.

  2. China Kim to the Woodshed – Do not be decieved

Make no mistake, China who is rising fast in the East and in new alliances with Russia, has taken little Kim to the woodshed.
