A Harbinger Of 2012 Arises To Our North (Unless You Hail From Alaska)

Update: Hot Air sees a similar future in store for Obama in 2012 – that is Bin Laden’s death is no guarantee of a win. – end update

Canada’s election results should put the fear of massive electoral defeat in the hearts of all liberals:

The Liberals, who have ruled Canada for more years than any other party, were reduced to a dismal third place showing with their worst ever seat haul.

“What a great night. … Canadians can now turn the page on the uncertainties and the repeat elections of the past seven years and focus on building a great future,” Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper told a victory rally in Calgary, Alberta early on Tuesday morning.

“Our plan (is) to create jobs and growth without raising your taxes,” he said to loud cheers.

It was a drubbing, not unlike the 2010 elections here in the US. And it carries the same undertones and forces. Economic growth through limited government and lower taxes.

And if anyone on the left is delusional enough to think national security hawks will be rushing to vote for Obama after the death of Osama Bin Laden, then they do not understand what happened to George H.W. Bush in 1992 when he lost to Bill Clinton.

George Bush Sr. had won a decisive war against Saddam Hussein and had freed Kuwait prior to his midterm election. Most thought he was a shoe in. However, the electorate reasonably concluded the threat to the US had been significantly diminished because of this success. Who would be dumb enough to go up against a nation that destroyed the 4th largest army in the world in a matter of 72 hours of ground action? It was not the right conclusion, just a reasonable and understandable conclusion. In many ways Bush Sr. was a victim of his overwhelming success. He reduced the international threat, which allowed Americans to refocus on the economy and kitchen table issues.

With the death of Bin Laden I predict a lot of people will hope and expect a clear message to have been sent to our enemies. Don’t Mess With America! It is clear in all our minds we are not sheep willing to go to the slaughter without a fight, as Bin Laden wrongly assumed. We are a peaceful and measured people, who will act if provoked. And our actions will be deadly. We expect this to be universal common knowledge now. Not that it will be, but we will expect it to be.

Like everyone else, we prefer peaceful coexistence and tolerance. President Obama will get some credit for completing the work begun under President Bush, and for making a bold and risky decision on the mission itself. But that will not help him on the economic front. His economic record is a shambles. With Osama dead and the Islamicists on their heals, we are more concerned with finding a better economic solution than we have seen (not to mention more interrogations and less Miranda Rights for terrorists caught in the act).

The rejection of the left is still in full swing. Nothing so far has changed that dynamic, as far as I can tell.

I would hope that opening up their medical system to more private practice doctors will be a first step toward improving the standard of living and reducing the tax burden for Canadians.

AJ, I think you give Obama too much credibility on the national security front. The Republican candidate can make a sound case that all Obama did was to profit from the policies of President Bush – policies that in many cases Candidate Obama loudly opposed.

Add in the grinding of Afghanistan, the pointless bumbling in Libya, and the slowly emerging horror story that is the hollowing out of the American military, and you have a recipe for a good issue for the Right.

Quite aside from massive debt, a strangled economy, massive unemployment, and rabid leftism.

as I commented in the other thread, the most delicious part is that in the week before the election, *Every* media outlet was cheerleading for the far left NDP and predicting that Harper’s conservatives had no chance of winning a majority – because the far left was so popular, of course.

NOW they’re all sitting around with their heads in their hands, asking themselves (seriously! they are!) “How could this have possibly happened? How come none of us saw this coming???”

Because you only see what you WANT to see, you idiots!!!

Forget the polls – forget the pundits. They are fake, and they know nothing.

  4. kathie says:

The only person I thought of when I heard that Osama had been killed was George W. Bush. My bet is that his poll numbers went up!

  5. Frogg1 says:

That’s a good point, Kathie, because Bush came to my mind also.

  6. kathie says:

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy Osama is dead. But how is it that this White House of all White Houses, flies into a sovereign country with out notice, assassinates several people, some whom don’t even have a gun to defend themselves, doesn’t bother with a military trial or one held in down town New York, reads nobody their rights, carries one of the dead off and dumps him in the Sea of Arabia, ransacks their home, and wants a big Hail to the Chief and the dems are applauding this kind of behavior saying he is a shoe in for 2012. Someone might have a case for sending the guy to jail!

  7. Frogg1 says:

This also comes to my mind:

Remember when the Obama Admin wanted to charge the lawyers who came up with the enhanced interrogation techniques guidelines with a crime? We were all worried these guys could actually be put in jail simply for serving their country? Remember when Democrats were accusing Cheney of having his own personal assasination squad? You know, the same squad that just killed Osama bin Laden? Remember how Obama refused to attend any of the 9/11 memorial events at ground zero since elected (did not attend 9/11/09 nor 9/11/10). Well, he now plans to visit ground zero this week….and, no doubt he will give a big speech there.

I hope these intel and military guys now know without any doubt the true measure of the work they did way back when. I hope they feel redeemed against Obama’s prior smears.

We are forever in their debt.

SEAL Team That Killed Bin Laden was Smeared as Dick Cheney’s ‘Assassination Ring’

There are some who are always trying to make themselves look bigger than they are. They often use the word “I” when they speak. There are others who are silent heroes.

I stand with our silent heroes.

As time progresses and facts become known, I hope the country does two things. First, we should acknowledge that we have a ‘continuity of government’. You’d be surprised to find how big of a case Clinton made to prepare the country for a War in Iraq. Bush continued on. Bush put into place the tools necessary to fight the war on terror …..Obama continued on. We should now get Obama and the Democrats to retract their accusations against the Bush policies which they continued. While they are at it, perhaps they should reinstate some of the ones they may hve too abruptly terminated.

    Liberal Morality in a nutshell:

Anything I do is “Good” by definition and worthy of ceaseless praise. No matter what it is; I am “Good” so everything I do is “Good”.

Anything my enemies do is “Bad” by definition and worthy of absolute condemnation. No matter what it is; they are “Bad” and so everything they do is “Bad.”

There are no other rules. If you think there are, you must be a racist.

    Excellent article!

I see that Obama invited Bush to join him at Ground Zero day after tomorrow. And Bush declined. I don’t blame Bush.

  11. crosspatch says:

Honestly, if I were Bush, why would I want to participate in an Obama campaign rally?

  12. crosspatch says:

It is also interesting that this raid has clobbered some myths about Osama. In particular that he had a kidney ailment. His autopsy showed that he was in good health with no chronic illness of any sort.

I believe the notion that he was somehow sick came a long time ago from someone reading too much into his hanging out with Dr. al-Zawahiri before 9/11. I think someone assumed that because he had a doctor at his side a lot of the time that he must have been ill.

  13. lurker9876 says:

You know, crosspatch, it seems odd that Obama would go to Ground Zero after what he said at the Iftar dinner endorsing the building of the GZM.

I am beginning to wonder if Bill Daley is really running the whole show…telling Obama what he should do and say.

Is Bill Daley actually emboldening Leon Panetta? And did Bill Daley strongly recommend to Obama to replace Gates with Leon?

    Something is going on there.

But strange that we did not see Bill’s footprints in the Libya kinetic military action….

  14. crosspatch says:

Ireland kicked out their liberal government. State elections in New South Wales, Australia saw their “progressives” kicked out. Sweden kicked theirs out a few years ago and just re-elected a center right government last year. Just wait till Spain’s elections They will have local elections next month and general elections in March of next year.

  15. WWS says:

Ireland is a good example of how the change can come too late. Sure, they’ve changed government’s now – but Ireland today is as bankrupt as any country can get, and they are going to be stuck in extreme poverty for a generation no matter who they elect.

Previous governments didn’t just govern badly, they destroyed the entire economic fabric of the nation. That’s where borrowing far beyond one’s ability to pay leads every time.

Same thing is happening to Spain, Portugal, Greece – given the pressures on the populace, I seriously worry how long it will be before they decide that Fascism is the answer. There’s precedent; that’s what they did the last time they were this desperate.
